COMPARISON GUIDE

Roller door types, brands and motors compared

Compare common roller door types, brands and motors by opening size, daily use, wind exposure, access and the level of support you may need.

Rural shed roller door and opening used to explain motor and automation work.
Real Rural Built Co roller-door project. Product selection depends on the opening, daily use, exposure and confirmed specifications.
YOUR STARTING POINT

You don’t need every detail worked out.

01
What the door has to do
02
The opening — rough is fine
03
Your weather and the site

A rough idea is enough to start a conversation.

Start with the job, not the badge on the curtain. Five answers narrow the field quickly, then the brand and motor tables help us confirm the product that fits.

Use these five questions before you compare brands

  1. Opening
How wide and high is the clear space, and what room sits above and beside it?
  2. Use
What passes through, and how many times will the door move on a normal day?
  3. Weather
Which way does the opening face, and how exposed is the site to wind and rain?
  4. Power
Is power available, and does the door still need to work during an outage?
  5. Access and security
Do you need phone control, vehicle access, remote opening or stronger locking?

A useful shortlist before the specification tables

Occasional rural access

A correctly balanced manual door can be the simplest, most serviceable answer when the opening is used occasionally.

Daily shed or workshop use

Motor capacity, duty cycle, controls and service access matter more when the door moves throughout the week.

Wide or exposed opening

Door class, structural support, wind exposure and the motor’s wind-locked capacity must be considered together.

Compare the motor ranges at a glance

The table is the detailed view. On a phone, the same information is presented as individual motor cards so you can compare without a cramped sideways scroll.

Door brands and range notes

Use this section when you need to match an existing door, curtain, guide or second bay. For a fresh opening, the five questions above remain the better place to start.

B&D (Roll-A-Door®)

The deepest door catalogue here, with one clear gap — no distinct step between its residential and industrial doors.

B&D’s Roll-A-Door® name carries the deepest catalogue on this page — a residential Series 1, industrial Series 2 (also sold as Firmadoor) and Series 3. One gap worth knowing: B&D doesn’t name a distinct wide-span door between its residential and industrial ranges, so a mid-size opening may need a closer look at where Series 2 starts.

The same wind-rated thinking carries through B&D’s R2 (non-cyclonic) and R3 (cyclonic) tiers.

Range coverage: ResidentialIndustrialWind-ratedCyclonic

Wind and exposure: B&D’s R2 doors cover the non-cyclonic wind ratings, and its R3 doors step the same range up to the cyclonic C-class ratings.

Standout detail: The deepest catalogue on this page — with no named wide-span tier between residential and industrial.

Steel-Line

A straightforward residential-to-industrial range with its wind performance built into the guide itself, not a separate product.

Steel-Line runs the familiar residential-to-industrial spread on 25–50mm guides, with wind performance built into aluminium guide tiers rather than a separately branded product line. The current C-Rated tier is certified to the cyclonic C2 class, on guides updated in 2021.

Which Steel-Line door suits which opening gets settled on your quote — tell us the opening and what the shed does, and we’ll match the tier.

Range coverage: ResidentialWide-spanIndustrialWind-ratedCyclonic

Wind and exposure: Steel-Line’s N-Rated guide tier covers the non-cyclonic ratings, and its C-Rated tier reaches the cyclonic C2 class.

Standout detail: Steel-Line replaced its 2017 ‘Wind Rated’ guide with the current C-Rated and N-Rated aluminium tiers in 2021.

Grifco

The heavy lifter of the trio — shed and commercial-grade motors built for big curtains and high cycles.

Grifco sits at the heavy end: in-drum LR-Drive-class units handle shed doors to about 28m² and curtains around 270kg, and the side-mount eDrive class stretches to roughly 50m² for serious commercial doors.

App control runs on the myQ platform, remotes are rolling-code Security+2.0®, and battery backup is available as an add-on — worth having on a shed you need into during an outage.

Range coverage: Big shed doorsHigh cyclesWind-locked openingsCommercial jobs

Standout detail: Grifco publishes its ratings both ways — standard and wind-locked — which makes honest motor sizing straightforward.

Merlin

The quiet one — the pick when the garage shares a wall with the house.

Merlin’s SilentDrive-class in-drum units suit home garage doors to around 18m² and 4.5m high, chosen when quiet operation matters most.

Current models carry app control on the myQ platform, with battery backup available as an accessory.

Range coverage: Home garagesQuiet operationApp control

Standout detail: Runs on the same Chamberlain myQ platform as Grifco — one app can drive the house door and the shed door.

ATA (Automatic Technology)

Australian-made openers from the value end through to proper shed doors — with the trio’s only built-in battery backup.

ATA’s range runs from compact GDO-6 units for single doors up to the GDO-10 Toro, which handles the same 28m², 270kg class as the big commercial units — with battery backup built in rather than bolted on.

Several door makers spec ATA-built units as their compatible openers, which says something about the range.

Range coverage: Shed doorsValue buildsBlackout-proof openings

Standout detail: The GDO-10 Toro’s integrated battery backup means the door still lifts in a blackout — no add-on needed.

Most door brands also sell their own openers, and we can fit those where they are the right call. The ranges above carry different capacities and control options, but none replaces matching the operator to the door, opening and real use.

Tell us which features matter to you and we will confirm the current product specification on the quote. If the door is wind-locked or unusually large, the motor rating and available clearances are checked together before anything is ordered.

Turn the comparison into a practical next step

Send the opening size, property location, a full photo from inside and outside, and a sentence about what needs to pass through. We will narrow the door and motor options without asking you to decode the catalogue.
