Horse Shelters Built for Real Properties, Not a Brochure

A good horse setup does more than get them out of the weather: it protects your horses, keeps paddocks and yards manageable through the wet, and makes feeding, rugging, farrier and vet visits easier. We design practical, hard-wearing run-in shelters, paddock structures and arena works around how your horses actually use the space, then supply the kit or build the lot.

We recommend a shelter based on how your horses use the space, not just a standard box

Explore the layouts below. Each can be adjusted to suit your property and the way you’ll use it.

Run-in / open-front shelters

The most popular option for paddocks. Open at the front so horses can come and go freely, oriented to block the prevailing wind and weather. Simple, hard-wearing, and easy for horses to use day in, day out.

  • Most popular
  • Free access
  • Weather-oriented

Open-sided shelters

For airflow and shade where summer heat is the bigger problem. Open sides keep things ventilated and comfortable so the shelter doesn’t become a stuffy box, while the roof still gives solid sun and rain cover.

  • Airflow
  • Shade
  • Ventilated

Enclosed shelters

For higher protection, or when you want to combine shelter with secure feed and gear storage. Add wind-break cladding on key sides, and design in a feed or tack area so one structure does more than one job.

  • Higher protection
  • Feed & gear storage
  • Wind breaks

Multi-bay & lean-to shelters

Multi-bay shelters suit multiple horses or separation needs, handy when herd dynamics mean dominant horses need their own space. Lean-to shelters run off an existing shed or stable block, often matched to what’s already on site.

  • Separation bays
  • Herd-friendly
  • Lean-to option

Arena & training area structures

Beyond shelters, we handle arena works: site prep, drainage, base build and edging, plus arena fencing and access gates. We also build shelter structures beside arenas for shade, tie-up and storage, and plan power runs for lighting-ready setups.

  • Base & drainage
  • Fencing & gates
  • Lighting-ready
Planning your horse shelter

Shelter that fits the daily routine.

Good cover is only part of a useful horse setup. The position, ground conditions and access should work for both your horses and the people caring for them.

What to plan for

  • Choose the position carefullyConsider prevailing weather, existing yards and how horses move through the space.

  • Keep access straightforwardAllow room for feeding, rugging and the regular visits your horses need.

  • Plan for wet groundDiscuss drainage and run-off early, alongside the shelter itself.

  • Include the gearThink about separate space for feed, tack and equipment, and how you’ll reach it.

The right fit for your property

Engineered for your site

Openings, orientation and wind exposure affect the structural design of a shelter. We’ll work through your intended use and property details, including the ground and drainage considerations that need to sit alongside the engineering.

Why us

Why horse people trust us to get the shelter and the ground right

Property-first design

We design around your horses, herd dynamics and routine: orientation, ventilation, bays and safe clearances, not a generic size that looks good on paper.

Premium Australian materials

Every structure is built around Australian-made BlueScope Steel, with COLORBOND steel options. If a component ever has to come from elsewhere, it’s named on your quote — before you sign.

We sort the ground too

Most shelter problems start under the shelter. We plan and deliver the base, hardstand and drainage so it stays usable year-round, not just in the dry.

Kit supply or full build

Choose what suits you: kit supply for your own builder, kit + build support, or full end-to-end design and construction including base, drainage and related works.

SHEDSAFE ACCREDITED

Confidence starts with the right specification.

Rural Built Co is ShedSafe accredited. The program independently reviews shed engineering design principles. For your shed, we work through the site, intended use and wind requirements so you can understand the specification behind the quote.

Materials

Australian-made steel. Any exception named on your quote.

A shelter that’s designed properly and built from premium Australian materials lasts longer, works better, and protects far more than it costs: your horses, your feed and your time.

Sizing & layoutAllow for the horses, the handlers and the daily jobs.

  • Number of horses
  • Whether you want separation bays
  • How you feed: round bales, nets or tubs
  • Whether you want space for farrier or vet work under cover

Roof styles & pitchChoose the cover and height that suit the space.

  • Gable roofs: classic look, good height and ventilation
  • Skillion roofs: clean, simple, often ideal for shelters
  • Mono-pitch / single-slope options for tight sites or add-ons
  • Lean-to extensions off existing sheds or stables

Orientation & ventilationWork with the weather while keeping air moving.

  • Oriented to block prevailing wind and weather
  • Ventilation planned so it stays comfortable, not stuffy
  • Open-sided or part-enclosed layouts to suit your climate
  • Wind-break cladding on the key weather sides

Cladding, profile & colourBalance shade, shelter and a finish that suits your place.

  • Cladding options to balance shade, airflow and weather protection
  • Profile choices to suit the look and the job
  • COLORBOND colour selection to match existing sheds, stables and home
  • Or keep it practical and simple: your call

Safety & finishesTalk through clearances and the places horses can reach.

  • Safe clearances and sensible access for horses and handlers
  • No sharp edges: durable, horse-friendly finishes
  • Tie-up points and rails where you need them
  • Heavy-duty gates and access points

Add-ons & extrasBring the feed, tack and future plans into the conversation.

  • Tell us if you would like feed or tack storage alongside the shelter.
  • Discuss wash-down, tie-up and handling areas while planning access.
  • If you expect more horses later, raise that early so expansion can be considered.

Our process

How we build your shelter: first consult to handover

01

Quick consult

What you’re solving for, where it’ll go, and how you use the space: mud, heat, wind, wasted hay, moving feed and water.

02

Site considerations

Orientation, access, slope, drainage and base requirements, the make-or-break part of a shelter that lasts.

03

Concept & clear quote

A practical concept with clear scope and inclusions, plus options if you want to compare apples with apples.

04

Engineering & approvals

Engineering and approvals support where required: wind region, terrain and the paperwork that typically goes with it.

05

Build & install

A clean plan for timing and site access: full build, or kit supply with support, depending on your scope.

FAQs

Questions, answered

What size horse shelter do I need?

It depends on horse numbers, herd dynamics, feeding style, and whether you want separate bays. We’ll recommend sizing based on how your horses will actually use it, not just what’s “standard”.

How long does it take?

Timing depends on design, engineering and approvals (if needed), and manufacturing. Once it’s confirmed, we’ll give you a clear install plan and an expected timeframe.

Can I customise my shelter?

Yes: roof style, cladding coverage, height, bays, colour and add-ons can all be tailored to your horses and site.

What materials are best?

We typically recommend durable steel options suited to rural exposure and low-maintenance ownership: Australian-made BlueScope Steel, with COLORBOND steel options and sensible cladding for airflow and weather protection. Any exception is named on your quote.

How do I prepare the site?

We’ll guide you on access, level, base depth and drainage: most shelter problems start with the ground underneath. If you want us to handle the full site scope, we can.

Do I need approvals or engineering?

It depends on your location and the structure type and size. We can help you understand when approvals are likely required, the engineering requirements (wind region, terrain category), and provide the documentation that typically supports approvals.

Do you offer kits with building support?

Yes: kit-only, kit + build, or a broader scope including base, drainage and related works. We can structure the project to suit your timeline, budget and confidence to install.
